PALEONTOLOGIA DA FAIXA COSTEIRA RECIFE - JOÃO PESSOA

Resumo

Preliminary remarks on the fossils encountered in the investigated area between Recife and João Pessoa, permit the age determination of the various formations. The Beberibe Formation is attributed to the Santonian and Campanian, because of the occurrence of the ammonite Pseudoschloenbachia. The Gramade Formation dates from the Maestrichtian; its coastal deposits as well as its shallow marine limestones are characterized by the ammonites Pachydiscus and Sphenodiscus. The Maria Farinha Formation shows abundant Nautiloids and Callianassa, indicating a Paleocene age.
